Evidence-Based Deformity Management era
Yves Cotrel and Jacques Dubousset revolutionized deformity correction in the 1980s and 1990s by introducing segmental posterior spinal instrumentation, enabling durable, three-dimensional scoliosis correction and catalyzing long-term outcome studies. Larry Lenke's classification of idiopathic scoliosis curves (Lenke classification, 2001) provided a standardized framework that has guided surgical planning and comparative outcome reporting in this era. Stuart L. Weinstein, along with Lonstein and colleagues, advanced evidence-based approaches to brace therapy and the natural history of scoliosis, shaping thresholds for intervention and supporting growth-preserving strategies. Growth-friendly instrumentation and safety practices were further refined by surgeons such as Paul Sponseller and Jae Suk Suk, whose work helped optimize posterior constructs and apply intraoperative neuromonitoring to enhance neural safety.
